Your employees work hard for you so it is only fair that you use regular commercial office cleaning to ensure their work environment is clean, tidy and safe.

But there are other ways of creating a pleasant office space in which to work, that can have other benefits too.

You can use natural air fresheners, such as spraying rooms with mixture of one part white vinegar to four parts water to absorb pollutants.

Another non-chemical air freshener is dried herbal pot pourri in a bowl, although this might not be practical in some office spaces.

Introducing some greenery can work both on the occupants’ mood. According to a study conducted in 2010 plants were found to have reduced tension/anxiety by 37% depression by 58% reduction, anger by 44% and fatigue by 38%.

They can also purify the air by absorbing some of the potentially harmful fumes that can emanate from printers, carpets or even the paint on the walls. All plants absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, which will improve indoor air quality.

It is best to stick to plants that don’t flower to protect anyone who might suffer from pollen allergies and to choose plants that will survive with minimal care.

Plants that will do well indoors include Aloe, Spider plants, Cactus and Succulents, Ivy, Rubber plant and Peace lily.

Rubber plants can grow quite large, do not need a great deal of light or care and are good to put in a space as a feature. They are well known for effectively removing indoor air pollutants.

Peace lily is also known for cleaning up the air. They too are tolerant of low light and grow vigorously. They are also tolerant of some neglect. If the leaves are drooping it doesn’t mean they are dead. Give them a drink and you can almost watch them, perk up. Peace lilies work well for focal interest and screening.

English ivy is very easy to grow, spreads vigorously and also helps eliminate mould.

If you have the space for a feature plant, the Areca Palm is excellent. While it likes to be in direct like it is excellent for cleaning the air and only requires a moderate amount of care. Its huge fronds can reach 6 feet in height and have up to 60 leaflets, making it particularly effective for filtering airborne particles.

Where space is limited, it is still possible to have small plants such as cacti and succulents, perhaps grouped together on a suitable shelf or window ledge to make an attractive display.

A combination of regular commercial office cleaning and using plants and natural air fresheners in between can do a lot for the inhabitants’ health, mental wellbeing and hence for business productivity.
